Our Tijuca National Park is the result of a reforestation project started in 1861. Ordered by D. Pedro II, our last Emperor. In the mid-19th century, coffee plantations and other activities such as charcoal and livestock farming devastated the primary and majestic Atlantic Forest.
Slavery was still in force, 6 slaves planted 130 thousand trees over 15 years. Then the forest, with some foreign flora species included in the reforestation, became stronger and was able to continue the regeneration process.
