Our Tijuca National Park is the result of a reforestation project started in 1861. Ordered by D. Pedro II, our last Emperor. In the mid-19th century, coffee plantations and other activities such as charcoal and livestock farming devastated the primary and majestic Atlantic Forest.
Slavery was still in force, 6 slaves planted 130 thousand trees over 15 years. Then the forest, with some foreign flora species included in the reforestation, became stronger and was able to continue the regeneration process.
Christ The Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Tijuca Forest, Taunay Cascade, Historic Downtown, Santa Teresa neighborhood, Ruins's House, Selaron Stairs, the Monastery of St. Benedict, Mauá Square, and the brand new Olympic Boulevard with amazing graffiti by Mr. Kobra, an artist renowned worldwide.
